This effect can be a very subtle one, as it is in the music of Webern, or in Luigi Nono’s composition for string quartet, Fragmente-Stille, An Diotima. This work produces the most powerful effect on me, even though the volume of sound is almost nonexistent. One has the feeling that there are extremely refined forms of such a physical effect. For now I deliberately choose two extremes, ignoring more normal examples. We are used to the normal effect of good music well played, but in these two extreme cases a definite physical quality makes itself felt.

And if we merely focus on the Dostoevsky who asserts the autonomy and independence of his world from the world of the West, we are being grossly unfair to him. To say nothing of the fact that like any other person he had the individual right to say what he liked and to make what mistakes he liked. But we must not turn a personal point of view into a general principle. Applying individual points of view to everything will inevitably bring error and inexactitude. Every individual person is wrong.
